Filoli is a country estate set in 16 acres of formal gardens surrounded by 654 acres in rural Woodside, California. An incredible amount of care has gone into preserving this historic landmark. Filoli possesses an extraordinary beauty and serves as a magnificent example of architecture and garden design from the Golden Age (early twentieth century). The English Renaissance gardens are exquisite and exceedingly well-maintained.
I remember my mother taking me here as a little girl and with the recent release of The Great Gatsby, I found myself thinking of Filoli. It’s truly a romantic place. The gardens are so vast and the abundant beauty is a feast for the senses! I loved wandering around aimlessly and gently touching flowers while listening to the birds chirp and the bees buzz. Gentle winds carry the delicious sweetness of Wisteria and fruit trees. It is a tranquil setting and the epitome of escape. As I strolled about the immaculate grounds it was very easy to imagine that I had surreptitiously slipped away from a lavish Gatsby-esque soirée.
*In the Garden Room (in the Sunken Garden, photos #2 & #3), there is a tiny doorbell to send for the butler when you would like more tea! Just amazing!
