Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce presented a romantic Sicilian fashion fairytale for their Dolce & Gabbana AW 2014 collection in Milan on Sunday. Sicily has provided ample inspiration for the design duo, but this time the look was decidedly less Byzantine and more Medieval.
The show began with snow falling as a twisted olive tree wound its way up out of the stage. Out of this enchanted setting came bejeweled balaclavas, furry bonnets and slightly raised corseted waists. Charming appliqués of branches, flowers and woodland creatures found their way onto coats, short trapeze dresses and sequined tunics. Keys were another motif; embroidered and in print. So as not to overwhelm, the playfully embellished collection was dotted with the designers signature black square-necked dresses and expertly tailored suits.
Accessories included jewelled pointy slippers, ankle and over-the-knee boots and gloves swathed in gemstones. Handbags ranged from little treasure-chests with locks to crystal encrusted evening bags.
*This show was full of incredibly rich jewel tones. I am normally not one for real fur, but I had to include the blood red fox fur coat. It’s little Red Riding Hood’s fashion fantasy pushed to the limit! Have you ever seen her looking so good?
