According to Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the concept of migrating birds fired their imaginations for Rodarte AW 2015. While there were some feather trimmings on the clothes, it was clear that the new collection was an extension of their wildly successful SS 2015 show. It was less about birds and more about Disco!* To a soundtrack full of seventies music, models came down the runway in covetable, party girl looks. There were lace tights, leather leggings, sheer camisoles, fur-trimmed outerwear and one-shoulder sequined cocktail dresses.
Few American designers produce the magical artistry the Rodarte sisters do. Their whimsical design aesthetic could fit right in at the London shows. Demonstrating an unparalleled flair for surface decoration, this presentation showcased an extraordinary synthesis of textures. My favorites? A black fitted sweater with netted sequin details at the neckline and cuffs paired with Studio 54-inspired leather leggings with lace insets. I also like the sheer cami with multicolored sequins and the black skirt with floral, metallic beading. The fabrication is rich and ornate, yet still light and youthful. Additionally, I love the sparkling crystal slip dress with ostrich feathers and burgundy embroidery. Wear any of these sexy pieces and be ready to shimmy on the dance floor!
*Take a closer look at the model’s faces. James Kaliardos for NARS applied Swarovski crystals to the girl’s eyes. The result was gorgeous reflective make-up. It wouldn’t be a real Rodarte show without plenty of shimmer and shine!
